“and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Colossians 3:23 KJV
Most of us have been there. There is something that needs to be done, but you can’t seem to find the motivation to do it. Whether it’s putting off handwashing those dishes, sending that email, or finally making that phone call. Procrastinating is one of my biggest self struggles.
In my journey to reduce my procrastination, my first step was simply being aware of it. It might sound small, but if I have the thought “oh I can do that later”, I try and follow that with “I know I’m just procrastinating”. It didn’t always prompt me to get up and do the job but it helped build my self-awareness.
My second step was sort of unintentional. When I was playing games on my phone or watching the same TV show for the hundredth time; that same voice that I use to acknowledge my procrastinating started saying “if you have time to play on your phone, you can wash those dishes”.
That’s where I’m at now. I don’t have a third step for you since I’m actively working through it. When I realize I’m doing something that really isn’t necessary or is just a time waster (for me it’s games on my phone) I make a conscious effort to do something. Even if it’s small like shredding the junk mail or folding the blankets on the couch.
Is my house perfect and organized? Nope! Do I always get up and do something when I know I have the time? Nope again! But I am making an effort, and I am doing way better than I was a few years ago. Self-awareness is the key here and I will continue to hold myself accountable and work towards having little to no procrastinating.
